To take the old lenses off, we put the light unit into oven for about 10-15 minutes at 80 °C and cut them off with a Stanley knife. If it becomes harder to cut, we put them to oven again and continue the process.
If the lens needs to be cleaned before bonding – we use microfiber cloth. Regarding the degreasing (if it’s necessary): almost all solvents harm acrylic plastic, thereby only small amount of white spirit or soapy water could be used.
Regarding the procedure of bonding. We have tried a variety of PU and hybrid polymer based adhesives. The last one we used was Weicon 310M one component adhesive on an MS polymer-basis. It does not contain any solvents, which could harm the plastic and paint. We apply a layer of glass primer on the edge of the housing for a better adhesion and a narrow (around 3 mm) strip on the black edge of a lens (because a glass primer harms the paint a little bit). After the primer dries out completely, apply about a 3 mm diameter band of adhesive on the housing (closer to the outer edge of the housing). It’s easy to cut off the excessive amount of hardened adhesive that will come out. Please be aware that adhesives of this type has a hardening time of 2-3 mm in 24 hours. Thereby the clamps can be removed not earlier than after a full day. Whilst full hardening of the 10 mm width seam will take 4-5 days.
Because of the technology that we are using, it is almost impossible to get the perfect fit shape. Thereby, we use clamps while bonding the lens to the housing, just make sure you don’t overtighten them!
