Aston-Martin V12 Vantage / V12 Vantage S

In : MotorLegend news 04.02.2009

Aston Martin V12 Vantage
British firm has fitted a monster new engine in its smallest model – and Auto Express is first to get behind the wheel

Big engine, small car – this is the ultimate go-fast formula when it comes to building supercars, and one that’s given us some famous machines.

The AC Cobra, the stunning Bugatti Veyron and even the original McLaren F1 all share that special balance between engine size and overall bulk. So, is Aston Martin’s new V12 Vantage ready to join this small, exclusive club?

On paper, you’d certainly think so! At 4,382mm long, the V12 Vantage is about the same length as a Ford Focus. Yet squeezed under the lightweight, heavily vented bonnet is the enormous 6.0-litre V12 that debuted in the incredible DBS.

It delivers 510bhp and 570Nm of torque – enough to slingshot the newcomer from 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 190mph.

The big question is, what’s the car like to drive? Predictably, first impressions are dominated by the engine, which is hard to ignore. Although the drama builds as you climb into the figure-hugging, optional carbon shell seats fitted to our car, the V12 is the undoubted star of the show. From the moment you get behind the wheel and push the sapphire-tipped key into the dash, the pulsating engine note fills the cabin with a deep, purposeful bark.

Throttle travel is long, and the clutch surprisingly light and easy to control. As a result, getting the car off the line couldn’t be easier. In fact, it’s so powerful, you barely need to touch the throttle to start the Vantage rolling.

Steering is weighty, and has a meaty, direct feel, which is enhanced by the small, slim, Alcantara-trimmed wheel. But as you head out on to the open road, the V12 serves up its first surprise.

Power delivery is smooth, gearchanges are slick and the ride is unexpectedly supple. Obviously, with all the weight of the engine up front (the V12 is 100kg heavier than the 4.7-litre V8 ), the ride is still firm – but it’s not crashy like some rivals, including the Porsche 911 GT2. For ultimate aural thrills, hit the sport button, located in front of the gearlever. This sharpens throttle response, and makes the exhausts even louder by opening the baffles.

Over fast, winding roads, these character traits combine to create a car that’s not just fun to drive, but immensely rewarding as well. At full throttle, the Aston demands fluid, measured inputs from the driver. However, it remains devastatingly fast point to point, not least because of the gargantuan amount of thrust on offer under the bonnet, combined with the incredibly grippy Pirelli tyres.

The final gold star has to go to the carbon ceramic brakes. As well as being light, they provide unbeatable stopping power – exactly what you need to build the confidence to make the very most of this model’s impressive potential. Looks like the big engine, small car club just got a thrilling new member.

Price: £135,000
Engine: 6.0-litre V12, 510bhp
Transmission: Six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive

In : Top Gear newsletter 13.08.2009

By Paul Horrell on Thursday August 13, 2009

Top Gear likes a bit of controversy, and it’s the Aston that provided it. Us mortals loved the V12 Vantage, lining up to declare it the best Aston ever. But the Stig declared us mistaken.

The discord is about the Aston’s handling. Last year on the Isle of Man we had a DBS and we hated it. This year on the road the V12 Vantage is deliciously different: it’s intimate and analogue when the DBS was distant and digital. You can feel the V12 Vantage’s steering as it works its way into corners, giving a reassurance we treasure. The suspension is softer than the DBS’s too, which makes it more progressive and more forgiving on a bumpy road or in the wet. For the real world, in other words.

At the track things get uneasy. It goes from initial understeer to power-oversteer a bit messily. We plug in the Stig for further analysis. He signals that the front end is too soft, designed to understeer to keep ordinary drivers safe on the road. In fast corners it rolls too much, he says, and in slow ones doesn’t have the traction to prevent oversteer. Stig prefers the DBS, which he says is a perfectly set-up tautly sprung sports car.

Watch Stig’s lap in the Aston V12 Vantage

Of course, no one, whether man or white-suited überman, had any issues with the Vantage’s V12. One letter and two digits that tell you pretty much all you need to know, but if you want to know more try some more digits: 5.9 litres and 510bhp, and no turbos to soften the noise. A good old-fashioned manual ‘box, and none of Aston’s clunky paddles. Well actually, a not-that good old-fashioned gearbox – the shift is on the clunky side.

Everyone agrees the Vantage is a knee-tremblingly beautiful thing. Well, everyone except the Stig who doesn’t do beauty.

Odd. We expected that when Aston put its biggest engine in its smallest car it would build a track monster. Instead it’s a joyously useable road car that doesn’t like powerlapping much at all.

Aston Martin V12 Vantage, DBS Carbon Black Editions

Aston Martin has unveiled rather aggressive-looking special versions of its V12 Vantage and DBS supercars, under the Carbon Black Edition banner. No prizes for guessing they're black and laced with carbonfibre trinkets.

What’s new on the Carbon Black Edition V12 Vantage and DBS?
The Carbon Black Edition V12 Vantage and DBS are coated with black metallic paint that takes 50 man-hours to apply, says Aston. Unique to the Vantage – buyers of which will be invited to Aston’s Performance Driving Course – is a carbonfibre strake over a black mesh side vent, as well as gloss black diamond turned alloys to complete the sinister image.

The interiors are clad in – you guessed it – black leather, which is hand stitched with silver thread at Aston’s Gaydon headquarters. Beneath the hide are carbonfibre and kevlar seats that save 17kg over the standard items, while the centre consoles and stacks of both Vantage and DBS are finished in glossy piano black.

Meanwhile, audio needs in the V12 Vantage are taken care of by a 700-watt Aston Martin system, with the DBS boasting a Bang & Olufsen set-up. As fine as they may be, we do question the need for trick sound systems when the voice of God is speaking from 12 cylinders beneath the bonnet.

Is there anything different under the skin?
Nope. These special editions are more about extra posing than performance. Mechanically, both the Carbon Black Edition V12 Vantage and DBS are standard 510bhp brutes. For the former that means 0-62mph in a savage 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 190mph, while the DBS manages 4.3 seconds and 191mph.

Sounds good. When can I buy an Aston Martin Carbon Black Edition and how much will it cost?
The order books are now open for both versions of the Carbon Black Edition. Prices have yet to be confirmed but Aston says both will be about 5% more expensive than the standard models. Expect, therefore, to pay around £142,000 for a top-dog Vantage and £167,000 for the Carbon Black Edition DBS.
