Ford Focus RS II + RS III

In : AutoExpress 19.02.2009

The wait is over, the new Focus RS is here, and Auto Express has already put it through its paces!

Where the Focus ST would push wide, the RS grips and goes with the efficiency of a true supercar. While the meaty steering keeps you informed with what’s going on, there’s none of the playful handling traits of a hot hatch.

Following in the tracks of legends like the whale-tail Sierra Cosworth of the Eighties and the famous Escort Cossie of the Nineties, the new Focus RS has some ground to make up if it is to be accepted as an all-time fast Ford great. The Mk1 Focus RS is fondly remembered, yet its wayward torque steering handling took the shine off the driving experience.

At first glance, it’s clear Ford has not held anything back with its latest high performance model. From the deep gloss black front splitter at the front to the swollen wheel arches at the sides and the huge tailgate roof spoiler, this Focus screams RS from every panel. And that theme continues when you start the engine…

A heavily re-engineered version of the ST’s powerplant, the five-cylinder unit settles to a subdued idle. However, once on the move it sounds like it’s tearing its way through the air, whooshing and popping as it delivers devastating pace.

Ford claims a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds, and we have no reason to doubt it. The engine’s full torque isn’t available in first gear, but once you slot the gearbox into second the instant thrust continues right up to the extended 7,050rpm redline. Grab the next ratio and the onslaught of acceleration continues.

But surely with all this torque going through the front tyres, the wheels couldn’t possibly cope with cornering, too? On smooth, dry tarmac at least, they can. Ford has developed a clever new suspension set-up called RevoKnuckle, which aims to rid the Focus of a writhing steering wheel under full throttle acceleration.

Apply the power when cornering and it’s clear the technology really works. Where the Focus ST would push wide, the RS grips and goes with the efficiency of a true supercar. While the meaty steering keeps you informed with what’s going on, there’s none of the playful handling traits of a hot hatch. Instead, Ford has created a true high performance model with both road and track pace that few cars will be able to match.

Our test route on the challenging mountain roads above Nice in France were perfect for showing off the Focus’s amazing performance…but did its fuel economy no favours. By the end of the day the trip read-out told us we had averaged 14mpg (soit 20L/100km)! That’s what we’d expect from a supercar, and less than half the official 30mpg combined figure.

While you’ll have to set aside huge sums for fuel and insurance, the Ford’s list price is less imposing. At £24,995, the RS seems pricey for a Focus, but this is no modified hatchback, it’s a tremendous performance machine.

The RS legend lives on!

FIRST OPINION
Sticking the legendary RS badge onto the back of just any old hot hatch wasn’t an option for Ford. It needed to make a jaw dropping performance machine – and it has succeeded! While the new Focus RS lacks the delicate feel of a lively hot hatch, its epic pace, never-ending cornering grip and enticing sound track make it an instant classic. There’s no doubt it will cost a fortune to run, but that won’t stop the Focus RS from putting a smile on the face of everyone who gets behind the wheel.

:II:

In : AutoExpress 01.02.2010

Ford’s new RS twins

It's the future of the hottest Focus ever – but ‘R’ you ready for it? Feast your eyes on the two cars that will get every fast Ford fan salivating in anticipation!

According to Auto Express sources, the firm is planning a pair of new RS models. First up is a stripped-out Clubsport, designed to wave farewell to the current car in spectacular style. And then there’s a brand new RS, based on the Focus unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show.

The RS Clubsport (white and blue) will arrive before the end of the year. Limited to 500 models and priced at around £35,000, it will get a 350bhp, 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbo. There will also be lightweight racing seats, lowered and stiffened suspension and sticky tyres, plus a dramatic paintjob. With that extra punch but fewer kilos to carry around, it should sprint from 0-60mph in five seconds. As with Renault’s previous Mégane R26.R, it will be a fitting send-off for one of the best RS models in history.

Its replacement, the all-new RS (above), will be crammed with technology, and offer fans a totally different experience to the current car. A revolutionary hybrid system will give it the option of four-wheel drive.

The outgoing RS’s much-loved 2.5-litre unit will make way for a 2.0 EcoBoost direct-injection turbo in the new car. This will be teamed with an electric motor to offer more muscle, and cut emissions and fuel consumption.

In short, the RS will reinvent the hot hatch. So, where will this hybrid powertrain come from? Well, it’s already been revealed – in Peugeot’s SR1 concept (Issue 1,097). Although Ford is remaining tight-lipped at present, the French maker recently let slip to Auto Express that it will co-develop the new system with the blue oval.

While the SR1 uses the same 218bhp 1.6-litre turbo as the MINI JCW, augmented by a 95bhp electric motor, the Focus RS EcoBoost will be mated to a slightly less powerful unit in order to ensure reliability.

Total output should be 300bhp, and with the engine driving the front wheels while the electric motor feeds the rears, the Focus RS will have incredible traction. Expect 0-60mph in five seconds and a 155mph top speed. What’s more, thanks to the torque-vectoring system from the regular Focus, a development of the existing RS’s RevoKnuckle suspension set-up and dynamic cornering control, the RS’s grip, stability and adjustability will really set the driving experience alight.

In addition, the car will have the ability to juggle electric assistance according to road conditions, a stop-start system, brake energy recovery and a dual-clutch Powershift box. This means it could return 40mpg and emit 150g/km of CO2.

The new model will look the part, too, enhancing the striking lines of the fresh Focus with a sporty bodykit. The front boasts extra air intakes – with bonnet vents which hark back to those of the Escort RS Cosworth. And at the rear, a dramatic venturi-style bumper and huge roof-mounted spoiler complete the head-turning looks.

Inside are Recaro sports seats and carbon fibre trim. These will complement a sat-nav and Wi-Fi touchscreen, radar cruise control and voice activation.

Unfortunately, the Focus RS won’t arrive for at least another three years. In the meantime, the next 18 months will see the debut of a high-performance non-hybrid ST with a 240bhp 2.0-litre EcoBoost turbo.
