Everyone in this group I can see are massive S1 fans and I'm always so touched and pleased to see what a great fan base this car continues to build.
So I thought you loyal people should learn a tiny bit more about the Nyobolt directly from the horse's mouth!
Some of you may remember some sketches I did for Autocar in 2015 for a 'super Elise', Geary at Elise parts even looked at trying to make that a reality but it was simply too expensive. The opportunity to have another go happened when I was doing some freelance work for Nyobolt a couple of years back- they asked me to work on some mobile charging stations.
I got talking to Nyobolt about the opportunity for a Nyobolt technology demonstrator vehicle and so this concept was born.
As you can imagine, I work on a lot of electric cars these days but the question of designing electric sports cars has always interested me. I don't think the answer is 1000-2000hp, £1m and the weight of a small planet. The Nyobolt solution of a small, lightweight, fast charging product was much more appealing, and in keeping with the concept of how I imagined a future Elise.
So onto the design, first and foremost this is a very different animal to the Elise. It weighs about the same as an Exige and is a similar size but packs about 470BHP.
It is therefore significantly faster and more powerful than a S1 and the new design reflects that. Muscular, aggressive and less cute!
I think the front of the Elise is still beautiful so that it remains in all its elements but the back is where the most change is (and also where it's most controversial!)
I've always felt the S1 could look more planted on the road from the rear, hence the very aggressive rear end which is wider, lower, more functional- and no fake vents!. The rear window of the S1 has always looked too high to me as well so this has all been lowered to make the car look more menacing. And the rear spoiler I once cursed is still there, now an intrinsic part of the Elise's identity
Overall the car now sits on much bigger wheels and tyres with perfectly sculptured wheel arches, so I believe the stance is much much better.
So it shouldn't really be compared to the original S1, which I started sketching in 1994!
I still love my 160 Sport and it's not going anywhere!
I just thought the time was right to see this lovely car through more futuristic eyes, so don't look at it parked next to your S1, think about how it might fit tomorrow in a very changing sports car market.
Thanks again for your fantastic Elise loyalty and love for the S1,
All the best,
Julian
